Sprachschatz

(Multilingual) language support with digital media

As part of the two-year pilot project "Sprachschatz - Bibliothek und KiTa Hand in Hand", 20 impulses for the implementation of media education programs with digital media have been created.

Children's linguistic understanding and ability to express themselves is promoted above all by creating a variety of language opportunities - be it by looking at picture books together as a family, singing a song to start the kindergarten day or engaging with digital toys, for example in the area of audio play media. Digitalization has significantly expanded the spectrum in recent years. As part of the two-year qualification program "Sprachschatz - Bibliothek und Kita Hand in Hand" ("Language Treasure - Library and Nursery Hand in Hand") run by the Fachstelle für Öffentliche Bibliotheken NRW, numerous media education methods for promoting language and media skills while taking diversity and multilingualism into account were developed, tested and compiled into event offers in the form of impulse cards.

The impulse cards are part of a final report and are aimed at (media) pedagogical specialists, pedagogical staff in daycare centers and pedagogical library staff. They were intensively tested by the participating libraries and daycare centers - and are therefore designed to be very practical. The cooperation between daycare centers, libraries and municipal integration centers enabled a multi-perspective view of the planning and implementation of the offers. The impulses therefore take into account aspects of early education as well as media education and intercultural aspects. The impulse cards are based on the educational areas of the "Educational principles for children from 0 to 10 years in child daycare and primary schools in North Rhine-Westphalia". The following educational areas are covered in depth:
  • Language and communication
  • Media
  • Aesthetic education, creativity
  • Social and (inter-)cultural education
  • MINT
  • Exercise; body, health and nutrition

Most of the offers take more than two areas of education into account at the same time. For example, working with tablets or digital cameras not only promotes the sensible use of digital media, it also encourages children to talk and tell stories.

In addition to the impulse cards for media education work with children, there are also impulses for media education activities with adults - for example with daycare teams, parent mentors or parents.

About the qualification program

The qualification program "Sprachschatz - Bibliothek und Kita Hand in Hand" was initiated by the Fachstelle für Öffentliche Bibliotheken NRW and the Landesweite Koordinierungsstelle Kommunale Integrationszentren (LaKI) and implemented as a pilot project in six municipalities throughout NRW between 2017 and 2019. The joint work was scientifically supported and evaluated by the University of Paderborn. The Ministry of Culture and Science NRW funded the project. During the project period, the respective public libraries in Bergneustadt, Euskirchen, Krefeld, Oberhausen, Ochtrup and Plettenberg cooperated with one or two daycare centers and the municipal integration center (KI) located at the district or independent city level. The aim was to promote language and media education and to establish sustainable cooperation between the partner institutions. The focus was also on publishing the developed modules.
