Education needs language

Model program of the German Children and Youth Foundation and the Mercator Foundation

The quality guideline "Shaping language education together" summarizes findings and practical examples from the model programme on how to make the transition from nursery to elementary school as seamless as possible.

Publication "Shaping language education together" A guide to quality development for daycare centers and the transition to elementary school.

From 2014 to 2016, the "Education needs language" pilot program of the German Children and Youth Foundation and Stiftung Mercator supported over 30 selected daycare centres and elementary school in North Rhine-Westphalia in jointly shaping language education and support. The focus was on the following questions: How can a seamless transition of language education from nursery to elementary school be created? How can language education be provided in German and the languages of origin of multilingual children? How can educators and teachers coordinate their concepts and methods of language education and support? And how can parents be actively involved in the children's language education process?

The aim of the quality guide "Shaping language education together" is to make the findings and practical examples from the model program accessible and transfer them to other regions. The guide is designed to be practical, summarizes the state of scientific knowledge in the central area and refers to further literature via links. It is aimed at educational professionals, teachers and heads of daycare centers and elementary school, specialist advisors and multipliers in North Rhine-Westphalia and nationwide.
